What is the Past Continuous?
The Past Continuous (also called Past Progressive) is used to describe actions that were in progress at a specific moment in the past. It emphasizes the duration or ongoing nature of past activities.
Formation
Subject + was/were + verb-ing
I was studying at 8pm yesterday.
They were watching a movie when I called.
Positive Form
- I/He/She/It was working
- You/We/They were working
Negative Form
- I/He/She/It was not (wasn't) working
- You/We/They were not (weren't) working
Question Form
- Was I/he/she/it working?
- Were you/we/they working?
When to Use Past Continuous
1. Actions in progress at a specific time in the past
At 7pm last night, I was cooking dinner.
What were you doing at midnight?
2. Background action interrupted by another action
I was reading a book when the phone rang.
She was walking to work when she saw her friend.
3. Two actions happening simultaneously
While I was studying, my brother was playing video games.
They were talking while we were eating.
4. Setting the scene in a story
The sun was shining, birds were singing, and children were playing in the park.
5. Repeated actions showing irritation (with "always")
He was always complaining about everything!
⚠️ Important Note
When one action interrupts another, use Past Continuous for the longer background action and Simple Past for the interrupting action:
I was watching TV when my friend arrived.
