What is the Future Continuous?

The Future Continuous is used to talk about actions that will be in progress at a specific time in the future. It shows that something will be happening at that future moment - the action will not be finished.

Think of it this way: Future Continuous = "will be in the middle of doing something"

How to Form It

Positive Sentences

Formula: Subject + will be + verb-ing

  • I will be working at 3 PM tomorrow.
  • You will be studying tonight.
  • He will be eating lunch at noon.
  • She will be traveling next week.

  • They will be sleeping at midnight.

Contractions:

The -ing Rules (same as other continuous tenses):

  • wait → waiting

Verbs ending in -e: remove -e, add -ing

  • make → making
  • write → writing

Short verbs: double the final consonant

  • run → running
  • sit → sitting**

Negative Sentences

Formula: Subject + will not (won't) be + verb-ing

  • I will not be working (I won't be working)
  • You will not be studying (You won't be studying)
  • He will not be eating (He won't be eating)

When Do We Use Future Continuous?

1. Actions in Progress at a Specific Future Time

The main use: something will be happening at an exact time in the future.

  • At 3 PM tomorrow, I**'ll be working**. (I will be in the middle of working at that time)
  • This time next week, we**'ll be flying** to Paris. (in the middle of the flight)
  • At 8 PM tonight, she**'ll be having** dinner. (dinner will be in progress)
  • Tomorrow at noon, they**'ll be meeting** with the boss.

Time expressions: at 3 PM, this time tomorrow, at that moment, at 8 o'clock

Think of it visually:

        3 PM tomorrow
            ↓
I'll be working _______________
         (in progress at that time)

2. Actions That Will Be in Progress Over a Period

Something will be happening during a period of time in the future.

  • I**'ll be studying** all evening.
  • She**'ll be working** all day tomorrow.
  • We**'ll be traveling** for two weeks.
  • They**'ll be staying** with us all month.

Time expressions: all day, all evening, all week, for two weeks

3. Future Plans and Arrangements (Polite Way)

Using Future Continuous makes questions about plans sound more polite and less direct.

Direct: Will you come to the party? (simple question) More polite: Will you be coming to the party? (sounds softer, less pushy)

Direct: Will you use the car tomorrow? More polite: Will you be using the car tomorrow? (I want to borrow it, but asking politely)

Why is it more polite? It sounds like you're just asking about their plans, not demanding an answer.

Future Continuous vs. Future Simple

Understanding the difference between these two future forms.

Future Simple = Decision, Prediction, Promise

  • I**'ll work** tomorrow. (simple fact, decision, or promise)
  • She**'ll call** you. (promise or prediction)
  • They**'ll arrive** at 10. (simple future fact)

Future Continuous = Action in Progress

  • I**'ll be working** at 3 PM tomorrow. (in progress at that specific time)
  • She**'ll be calling** you between 5 and 6. (during that period)
  • They**'ll be arriving** around 10. (the process of arriving)

Compare:

  • I**'ll see** you tomorrow. (Simple - we will meet)
  • I**'ll be seeing** you tomorrow. (Continuous - sounds more natural, like it's already planned)

The Future Continuous often sounds more natural for plans.

Time Expressions with Future Continuous

Specific future times:

  • at 3 PM / 8 o'clock / midnight / noon
  • this time tomorrow / next week / next year
  • at that moment / at that time

Periods of time:

  • all day / evening / night / week / month
  • for two hours / three days / a week

Examples:

  • At 10 AM tomorrow, I**'ll be having** a meeting.
  • This time next week, we**'ll be lying** on the beach.
  • I**'ll be working** all day tomorrow.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Mistake 1: Forgetting "be"

  • ❌ I will working tomorrow.
  • ✅ I will be working tomorrow. (I'll be working)

Mistake 2: Wrong spelling of -ing

  • ❌ I will be runing.
  • ✅ I will be running. (double the n)
  • ❌ She will be makeing.
  • ✅ She will be making. (drop the e)

Mistake 3: Using Future Continuous when Future Simple is better

  • ❌ I will be call you tomorrow. (should be simple future)
  • ✅ I will call you tomorrow. (I'll call you)
  • ✅ I will be calling you between 5 and 6. (during that period - continuous is good)

Mistake 4: Using continuous with state verbs

Just like other continuous tenses, don't use Future Continuous with state verbs:

  • ❌ I will be knowing the answer.
  • ✅ I will know the answer.
  • ❌ She will be having a car. (possession)
  • ✅ She will have a car.
  • ✅ She will be having dinner. (eating - action verb is OK)
