Articles in English: Part 3 of 3
This is Part 3 of our 3-part guide to English articles.
In this part, you'll learn when to use no article, how to choose between a/an, the and zero article, and you'll practise everything.

Zero Article - No Article
Sometimes we do not use any article. This is called the zero article.
When to Use No Article
Plural nouns (general):
- Dogs are friendly.
- I like books.
- Students need to study.
Uncountable nouns (general):
- Water is essential for life.
- I love music.
- Information is power.
- Life is beautiful.
Names of people:
- John is here.
- I saw Sarah yesterday.
Most countries and cities:
- I live in Germany.
- She’s from Japan.
- We visited Paris.
Languages:
- I speak English.
- She’s learning Spanish.
- Do you understand German?
Sports and games:
- I play football.
- She likes tennis.
- They’re playing chess.
Academic subjects:
- I study mathematics.
- She’s good at history.
- He teaches physics.
Meals (general):
- Breakfast is ready.
- What’s for lunch?
- I had dinner at 7 PM.
But: use the when being specific:
- The breakfast at the hotel was excellent.
Bed, home, work, school, church when talking about their main purpose:
- go to bed
- go home
- go to work
- go to school
- go to church
But: use the when talking about the building itself:
- go to the school
Means of transport with "by":
- by car, by bus, by train, by plane, by bike
But: use the when talking about a specific vehicle:
- I came by bus.
- I took the bus.
Days, months and possessives also usually take no article:
- See you on Monday.
- My birthday is in July.
- It’s my book.
A/An, The, or Zero Article?
Here is the basic idea:
- Singular countable noun, general or first mention → a/an
- Specific noun → the
- Plural or uncountable noun, general meaning → zero article
Decision Flow
- Is the noun specific?
Yes → use the
No → go to step 2 - Is it singular and countable?
Yes → use a/an
No → use zero article (or sometimes “some”)
Common Mistakes
- ❌ I need a advice. → ✅ I need advice. / some advice.
- ❌ I like the dogs. [general] → ✅ I like dogs.
- ❌ She’s best student. → ✅ She’s the best student.
- ❌ I live in the Germany. → ✅ I live in Germany.
- ❌ I speak the English. → ✅ I speak English.
- ❌ He’s teacher. → ✅ He’s a teacher.
- ❌ a apple → ✅ an apple
- ❌ an university → ✅ a university
- ❌ It’s my the book. → ✅ It’s my book.
Special Cases
Go to school = as a student
Go to the school = to the building
Go to bed = to sleep
Go to the bed = physically go to the bed
By car = using a car as transport
In the car = inside a specific car
