Articles Pt. 3

Grammar Explanations

TL;DR - Key Takeaways Quick overview before you read
  • Use no article (zero article) with plural nouns, uncountable nouns, names of people, most countries/cities, languages, sports, academic subjects, and meals when speaking generally
  • Use "a/an" for singular countable nouns that are general or mentioned for the first time
  • Use "the" when referring to something specific that both speaker and listener know about
  • Some phrases change meaning depending on articles: "go to school" (as student) vs "go to the school" (the building), "by car" (transport method) vs "in the car" (inside specific car)
  • Common mistakes include using articles with advice/uncountable nouns, using "the" with general plurals, forgetting articles with singular jobs, and using articles with countries or languages
