Every few months, a new app promises to replace your language teacher. Every few months, a teacher's association pushes back and says AI can't replicate a real conversation. Both sides are half right, and the actual research is more specific than either claim.

A 2024 Harvard randomised controlled trial gave the debate a hard number. Students using a GPT-4-based tutor achieved double the learning gains of a standard active-learning classroom, and finished their modules in a median of 49 minutes versus 60 for the classroom group. A meta-analysis of Automatic Speech Recognition tools in language learning found medium-to-large effect sizes for pronunciation improvement, specifically when the system gave immediate, explicit corrective feedback. This suits a machine well: repeat a phrase a hundred times, get instant phonetic correction, repeat again, without a human sitting there waiting on you.

The anxiety factor matters just as much. Research published in Frontiers in Education found that practicing with AI chatbots reduced speaking anxiety and lifted speaking scores by around 19%. For adult learners in Germany or Austria who haven't spoken English out loud since school, this isn't a minor detail. A lot of business English learners aren't held back by grammar, but by the fear of sounding stupid in a meeting. Where humans still win

Here's the number that should give any "AI-only" platform pause: AI systems correctly read a learner's frustration or confusion about 68% of the time, against 92% for human tutors. This gap shows up in whether people stick around: adults over 35 are three times more likely to complete a language program when a human tutor is involved, compared to going it alone with AI.

That tracks with what anyone who's tried to learn a language solo already knows: staying accountable to the tools for six months is harder than finding the right ones in the first place.

There's also a category of language skill that doesn't reduce to correct or incorrect: register, tone, timing, the difference between what you say to your boss and what you say to a colleague over coffee. The case for splitting the work

A joint study from Carnegie Mellon, Stanford and the University of Hong Kong tested what happens when you combine the two rather than pick one. Adding a human tutor alongside AI-driven instruction produced an extra 0.36 grade levels of progress compared to AI alone. The AI didn't get worse at its job when a human joined. It got better, because the human picked up exactly the parts it was weak at.

That split lines up neatly with cost and time too. AI tutoring runs somewhere in the 5-30 EUR a month range and is available at 2am if that's when you have twenty minutes free. Human tutoring runs 30-150 EUR an hour and needs a shared calendar slot. Used together, you get daily access for the mechanical stuff and weekly access for the parts that actually need a person.

The rough allocation the research points to: AI handles 10-20 minutes a day of vocabulary drills, grammar checks, pronunciation practice and low-stakes roleplay. A human tutor comes in once or twice a week to apply that language in conversation that doesn't follow a script, deal with idiom and register, and keep you showing up when motivation dips.
