Object Pronouns: Me, You, Him, Her

Object pronouns are small but very important words in English. They help us speak and write more naturally by replacing nouns in our sentences.

What are object pronouns?

When someone or something receives an action, we use object pronouns instead of repeating the person's name or the thing again and again.

Here are the object pronouns:

  • me - I
  • you - you
  • him - he
  • her - she
  • it - it
  • us - we
  • them - they

When do we use object pronouns?

1. After action verbs

Use object pronouns when someone receives an action:

  • The teacher called me.
  • I like you.
  • She knows him.
  • We invited her to the party.
  • They saw us at the cinema.
  • I told them the news.

2. After prepositions

Use object pronouns after words like: to, for, with, about, from, at

  • This book is for you.
  • Come with me!
  • She sits next to him.
  • The gift is from her.
  • They live near us.
  • I'm talking about them.

Common mistakes to avoid

Incorrect: She called I yesterday.
Correct: She called me yesterday.

Incorrect: The manager spoke to we.
Correct: The manager spoke to us.

Incorrect: Can you help he?
Correct: Can you help him?

Quick tip

Remember: Use subject pronouns (I, you, he, she, we, they) before the verb. Use object pronouns (me, you, him, her, us, them) after the verb or preposition.

Subject: I love coffee.
Object: Coffee loves me! (just joking!)

Practice makes perfect

Try to notice object pronouns when you read English texts or watch English videos. The more you see them, the easier they become!
