Nouns and Articles: A, An, The + This, That, These, Those

In English, we use small words before nouns to make our meaning clear. Let's learn about articles (a, an, the) and demonstratives (this, that, these, those).

What is a noun?

A noun is a word for a person, place, thing, or idea.

Examples: dog, teacher, London, book, happiness

Articles: A, An, The

Articles are small words we put before nouns. English has three articles:

  • a
  • an
  • the

When do we use "a"?

Use a before singular nouns that start with a consonant sound (b, c, d, f, g, h, j, k, l, m, n, p, q, r, s, t, v, w, x, y, z).

We use "a" when we talk about something general or for the first time.

  • I have a cat.
  • She is a teacher.
  • That is a book.
  • I need a pen.

When do we use "an"?

Use an before singular nouns that start with a vowel sound (a, e, i, o, u).

  • I ate an apple.
  • He is an actor.
  • It takes an hour.
  • That is an interesting idea.

Important: We use "an" before vowel sounds, not just vowel letters!

  • an umbrella (starts with vowel sound)
  • a university (sounds like "you-niversity" - consonant sound)
  • an hour (the "h" is silent - vowel sound)

When do we use "the"?

Use the when we talk about something specific or when both people know what we mean.

We also use "the" when we mention something for the second time.

  • The sun is bright today. (there is only one sun)
  • The book on the table is mine. (a specific book)
  • I saw a cat. The cat was black. (we mentioned the cat before)
  • Please close the door. (we both know which door)

A/An vs. The: What's the difference?

A/An = any one (not specific)
The = a specific one

Examples:

  • I need a pen. (any pen is okay)
  • I need the pen. (I want that specific pen)
  • She wants to buy a car. (any car)
  • She wants to buy the car. (a specific car she saw)

No article needed

Sometimes we don't use any article:

With plural nouns (general meaning):

  • Cats are animals. (cats in general)
  • Books are important. (all books)
  • I like apples. (apples in general)

With names and most countries:

  • John is my friend.
  • I live in Germany.
  • London is beautiful.

This, That, These, Those

These words point to specific things. We call them demonstratives.

This (singular, near)

Use this for one thing that is close to you.

  • This book is interesting. (the book is near me)
  • This is my phone.
  • I like this song.

That (singular, far)

Use that for one thing that is far from you.

  • That car is expensive. (the car is far away)
  • That is my house over there.
  • Do you see that bird?

These (plural, near)

Use these for more than one thing that is close to you.

  • These books are mine. (the books are near me)
  • These are my friends.
  • I bought these apples today.

Those (plural, far)

Use those for more than one thing that is far from you.

  • Those cars are new. (the cars are far away)
  • Those are her shoes over there.
  • Do you like those flowers?
