Present Continuous - Foundation (A2)
What is the Present Continuous?
The Present Continuous (also called Present Progressive) is used to talk about actions happening right now, at this moment. It's also used for temporary situations and future plans.
How to Form It
Positive Sentences
Formula: Subject + am/is/are + verb-ing
- I am working right now
- You are studying English
- He is eating lunch
- She is reading a book
- It is raining outside
- We are learning grammar
- They are playing football
The -ing Rules:
Most verbs: just add -ing
- work → working
- play → playing
- read → reading
Verbs ending in -e: remove -e, add -ing
- make → making
- write → writing
- come → coming
Short verbs (one syllable, one vowel, one consonant): double the final consonant
- run → running
- sit → sitting
- swim → swimming
- stop → stopping
Negative Sentences
Formula: Subject + am/is/are + not + verb-ing
- I am not working today (I**'m not working**)
- You are not studying (You aren't studying / You**'re not studying**)
- He is not eating (He isn't eating / He**'s not eating**)
- She is not reading (She isn't reading / She**'s not reading**)

Two ways to contract negatives:
- You**'re not** studying = You aren't studying

- We**'re not** going = We aren't going

This is one of the most important differences to understand!
Present Continuous = NOW or TEMPORARY

Present Simple = ALWAYS, ROUTINE, PERMANENT

- She lives in Munich. (where she lives - permanent)
- What do you do? (What's your job?)
