The verb “to be” has two past tense forms: was and were. Which one you use depends on the subject of your sentence.
Use “was” with:
- I
- He, She, It
- Singular nouns (the cat, my friend, etc.)
Use “were” with:
- You (singular and plural)
- We, They
- Plural nouns (the cats, my friends, etc.)
