Understanding the Rules
IN – Longer periods
Use IN for longer, less specific time periods:
- Months: in January, in December
- Years: in 2024, in 1990
- Seasons: in summer, in winter
- Centuries: in the 21st century
- Parts of day: in the morning, in the afternoon, in the evening
ON – Specific days and dates
Use ON for specific days and dates:
- Days of the week: on Monday, on Friday
- Specific dates: on July 4th, on the 15th of March
- Special days: on Christmas Day, on my birthday
- Days with parts: on Monday morning, on Friday evening
AT – Precise times
Use AT for precise, specific times:
- Clock times: at 3:00 PM, at midnight, at noon
- Specific moments: at sunrise, at the moment
- Festivals: at Christmas, at Easter
- Special: at night, at the weekend (British English)
