In this lesson we talked about the weather and the change of seasons. Your teacher shared some thoughts about September and how autumn already seems to be arriving. We noticed that the weather is quite rainy at the moment, but that this is not necessarily a bad thing.

An interesting part of our conversation was about feelings. We used the word “melancholy” to describe a soft, slightly sad mood. Together we discussed the idea that melancholy is not always negative — sometimes a quiet, thoughtful mood can feel pleasant and even beautiful, especially in autumn.

This was a good chance to practise expressing opinions and adding contrast. We used phrases like “at the same time”, “but”, and “in a certain way” to show that we can like something and still find it a little sad. We also practised softening our language with words such as “quite”, “maybe” and “slightly”, which makes our English sound more natural and polite.

Present Continuous for Changes

We use the present continuous (am/is/are + -ing) to talk about something that is changing or developing now. This is very useful when we describe the seasons or the weather. For example: “Autumn is approaching” or “The days are getting shorter.”

Contrast with “but” and “at the same time”

When we want to show two different ideas in one sentence, we can connect them with “but” or “at the same time”. This helps us sound more natural when we give opinions. For example: “It’s quite rainy, but at the same time I really like it.”

Softening Words: quite, slightly, maybe

English speakers often make statements softer with small words like “quite”, “slightly” and “maybe”. They go before the adjective. For example: “It’s quite rainy” or “It’s slightly melancholy.” These words make your opinion sound less strong and more polite.

“It seems to be” for Careful Statements

We use “it seems to be” when we are not completely sure, or when we want to describe an impression. The structure is “it seems to be + adjective/noun”. For example: “It seems to be autumn already.”
